Some of these animals are too difficult for wolves to take down, but it does depend on the circumstances. The wilderness is full of predators, from bears to lions. However, this doesn’t mean they aren’t preyed upon by other animals. While they will yield kills to larger predators like black bears, jaguars, wolves, or even a coyote pack, cougars are a top predator. These big cats of North America are niche apex predators. Our results suggest that the influence of predation on lower trophic levels may depend on the composition of predator communities. Wolves are apex predators they’re at the top of what’s called the food chain. Cougars, pumas, or mountain lions, it doesn’t matter what you call them. The consistency in results between the two systems suggests that brown bear presence actually reduces wolf kill rate. Similarly, the presence of bears at wolf-killed ungulates was associated with wolves killing less often during summer in Yellowstone. In Scandinavia, wolf packs sympatric with brown bears killed less often than allopatric packs during both spring (after bear den emergence) and summer. Although brown bears can monopolize wolf kills, we found no support in either study system for the common assumption that they cause wolves to killmore often. On the contrary, our results showed the opposite effect. the number of days between consecutive ungulate kills) as a proxy of kill rate. Predators consume meat so are often carnivorous or omnivorous if they also eat plants. Other apex predators include wolves, mountain lions, hawks, and weasels. They bear the top-most rank in the herbivore-carnivore food chain, lacking any natural enemy or predator. Bears are apex predators because they predate on other animal species while having few predators themselves. Trophic interactions are a fundamental topic in ecology, but we know little about how competition between apex predators affects predation, the mechanism driving top-down forcing in ecosystems. We used long-term datasets from Scandinavia (Europe) and Yellowstone National Park (North America) to evaluate how grey wolf (Canis lupus) kill rate was affected by a sympatric apex predator, the brown bear (Ursus arctos). Apex predators are commonly referred to as the top predators in the ecological food chain.
